For Alex Elewa-ikpakwu, his volunteer experience provided new perspectives on life and the resilience of young people. Alex was involved in a research project with New Directions’ Training Opportunities for Youth program, which offers opportunities and services aimed at supporting youth to gain work skills and join the labour market.
Alex was tasked with researching Anger Management to create an emotional regulation manual that can be used as a tool to assist vulnerable teenagers and people in the criminal justice system. He also assisted participants with resume building and various emotional regulation activities to keep the students engaged.
Alex wasn’t sure what to expect when he began volunteering. He was expecting to only sit and observe, but his experience was engaging, insightful, and exciting. Participants openly shared their stories and welcomed him with open arms. During his first week, a participant of the program taught him about dream catchers and took time to explain their significance. “I love the stories I got to hear from individuals and was inspired about the pride they have of their culture.”
As a sociology major, Alex is passionate about sharing life stories and experiences, and thoroughly enjoyed learning from the participants. The youth in the program came from many different backgrounds and have lots of goals. Alex was inspired by their sense of self-awareness and direction. “These individuals are getting their power back and taking control of their lives. Their stories are important to tell, and it’s great to see them become the writer of their own future.”
