Who attends Family Therapy?

The parent or adult caregiver is always involved in the work that we do. We support parents because they are the ones who will impact the most change in the family. We work through parents and caregivers to effect the change that we would like to see in the family.

Is there a waiting list?

Yes, due to high demand and the fact that our services are free, there tends to be a waitlist and it can range from 1-9 months. You can contact our intake administrator at (204) 786-7051 ext. 2560 to request service. Our intake coordinator will schedule an intake meeting and can let you know the approximate wait time before receiving services. To reduce the limitations a wait list can create, we have developed a “drop-in” phone line (204) 786-7051 ext. 2560. When you call this number you will be connected with a clinician that can provide brief counselling.

What happens in therapy?

Therapy can be different for many people. Some folks tend to thrive with talk therapy while others may benefit from using other modes like playing, drawing, games, or writing. We teach families how old patterns of being in relationship may be impacting how they interact with their children and help parents to learn how to help their children at home.

How long are the sessions? How often do we attend?

Sessions typically last for an hour although this may be altered to fit the needs of younger children. Sessions initially may be once a week, typically every two weeks or as you and the therapist decide the schedule.

Is there a cost for attending therapy?

There is no cost to you for therapy. We are funded by the United Way, and the Province of Manitoba.

Is there parking?

There is street parking available around the building at 717 Portage Ave. (1 block West of Maryland St.)

How long will we need to attend therapy?

We work together to meet the specific needs of your family and therefore cannot predict how long you will need to attend. It may be only a few sessions or a lengthier period of up to two years or 50 sessions. After reaching your therapeutic goals you may choose to return to therapy if you require support at a later date.

What if my kid does not want to come to therapy?

If you child is refusing to come to therapy we will still meet with you. We believe that parents can be the best resource for their children and will work with you to help your child.

Is the therapist allowed to tell anyone that we are attending therapy or what we say?

We can only tell someone that you are attending therapy with written consent from the parents. There are exceptions to keeping information confidential which includes if a child is being hurt, if anyone attending therapy is threatening to hurt themselves, or someone else.
